21 People On What They Would Tell Their 19-Year-Old Selves

  • Jonathan, 55: There is no such thing as “the only one”. You will meet lots of “the ones”. Only commit when the timing is right for the both of you – that can take years for some, and that’s okay.
  • Miranda, 24: Drop pre-med.
  • Isaac, 48: Deodorant does not count as a shower, and that haircut only looked good on Bon Jovi.
  • Anya, 42: Make the conscious decision to be happy, and then stick with it. Society will do everything in its power to convince you that your personal happiness is dependent on something external – beauty, success, wealth, etc. – it isn’t.
  • Parker, 55: 60% of the things you think are important now won’t matter a whit to you by the time you reach 50. The trick is to figure out the important 40% and work it.
  • Megan, 34: He doesn’t love you, and you will be okay.
  • Peter, 58: Don’t let anything stand in your way of taking part (or all) of your junior year abroad. You’ll never again have quite the same opportunity to experience a foreign land, for an extended period of time, in your youth. It is destined to be one of the most memorable aspects of your life.
  • Eleanor, 67: Talk less. Listen more.
  • Donald, 27: There’s a huge difference between who you want to be and who everyone around you wants you to be. Figure out which is which.
  • Camille, 56: Always remember: when falling off a horse, pull your tongue in.
  • Jackson, 57: No one knows anything for sure. They’re all just doing the best they can with what they have, just like you.
  • Vicki, 47: You’ll never have all the answers, so make every question count.
  • Donald, 38: You don’t have to grow up to be the dad you never had.
  • Katelyn, 30: Make the most out of college. You will never again be at a place where your only goal is to learn. Learn a lot, learn often, and learn with reckless abandon.
  • Joshua, 55: Women love to laugh.
  • Annabelle, 38: Drugs are not beautiful, glamorous or opulent. They are not a remedy, a solution, a cure-all, or a cure-anything.
  • Colin, 50: You miss so much life when you sleep until 3 PM. Wake up to see sunrises; they are the most stunning of nature’s masterpieces.
  • Eleanor, 26: Eating two pints of ice cream won’t make you happy. Neither will sprinting 10 miles. Be nice to yourself.
  • Aaron, 52: Don’t forget to ask that girl in the Oberlin library what kind of perfume she’s wearing. You’ll buy it for her in 20 years.
  • Scarlett, 54: Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Those that get you will love you, those that don’t, well, their loss. Just remember: Wherever you are, it’s a party.
  • Zack, 9: I hope you’re awesome. And be nice to girls.

1. Set your alarm and watch the sunrise. Don’t let the day fade without witnessing the first moment of wonder we get in this place.

2. Don’t downgrade your knowledge. If you know something, speak. If you understand something let people know. There is nothing humble about limiting others perceptions of you. Don’t be afraid to burn bright.

3. Tell the boy you love him. Tell the girl you love her. Kiss them passionately and without love, kiss them with love. Just kiss them.

4. Always choose to dance no matter who is offering. Always dance.

5. Listen to the music you love and turn it up when people tell you it’s rubbish. Let yourself bleed the lyrics, your bones need the rhythm.

6. Get passionate about the things that make your toes curl. Don’t let passion dwindle, it is the essence of life.

7. Always help, whenever you can. You’re hand could be the only one the person is offered.

8. Don’t be afraid of happiness.

9. Never let the weather dictate your day. Keep your plans even if it starts to rain, go to the beach anyway. There’s something beautiful about the ocean when it’s wracked with the fury of thunder.

10. Feel what you feel and don’t give a damn about how it affects others. Your emotions are valid, and they should be loud. If you want to scream, scream good. If you’re happy then have another scoop of ice cream.

11. Don’t mirror the negativity of others. No matter how easy it would be.

12. Don’t keep silent about the things that matter.

13. Love them anyway.

14. When a boy breaks your heart, light a cigarette and burn his photo. Cleanse your soul of him, don’t let him infect your purpose.

15. Keep your strength even if you’re crumbling. It’s ok to cry, but it’s not ok to fall without getting back up.

16. If you break a boys heart, try and tread carefully over the shards of glass you left. Remember he is probably hurting but remember that what you did was right.

17. Go out with your mum. Have a coffee and talk to her. You love her, even if you don’t always believe it. You need to stay close to her.

18. It’s ok to be the listener sometimes. Your friends may need a shoulder, and it might do you good to hear from them. It will bring you closer.

19. Sometimes you will be the one who needs a shoulder. That does not make you weak, it makes you human.

20. Don’t follow the rules. Be good. Eat some ice cream and work out. Love everyone but no one. It’s always a good time to sing the wrong lyrics to that song on the radio. Catch a shooting star and feel raindrops on your skin. Read a book in a day, just go and live. Do whatever damn thing brings light into your eyes and fire in your veins.

omfg I was walking home from the bus stop and I saw this elderly couple where this woman was pushing her husband in a wheelchair and I was like “aw that’s cute” but as I got closer to them I heard them talking and she was like “you’re a huge asshole, tom” and he was like “JUST PUSH ME INTO A DITCH”
